Activities


Most people have some form of hobby or pursuit that they like to do in their spare time. These activities may be a way of them getting some exercise or they may simply involve them doing something that they really like. Having a hobby or activity can be a useful way for many of winding down after work and can be a great source of pleasure.

Many people like to take on physical activities. So, they may play a team sport on a regular basis such as football or rugby. Or they may play tennis or squash with a few friends. Other may prefer to take their activity alone and may go swimming a few times a week, jogging every day before work or to the gym after work a few nights a week.

Some people will take on organised activities rather than doing stuff on their own. So, for example, parents may enrol their kids on a rock climbing course or an adult may sign up to a diving course to learn how to dive before they go on holiday. Some organised activities will come at a price and some may be free of charge.

Activities don’t have to involve physical effort, however, and many people have things that they do to help them wind down or simply because they find them fun. So, for example, an individual might collect stamps or a child might collect trading cards. For many, music remains a popular activity. Some may take lessons and may even play in amateur orchestras or bands. Others may have given up lessons a few years ago but may still play simply for pleasure.

Crafts are often popular activities. Some may enjoy a range of craft activities whilst others may focus on a particular favourite. So, for example, you might enjoy knitting and dress making and may spend your spare time making things. Or, you might join a scrapbooking club or go on a scrapbooking course where you can learn the art of scrapbooking. This is a particularly popular craft activity for people of all ages at the moment.

For many the activities they do are all about keeping busy. For others it may be all about keeping fit. Generally, most people will have some activities that they do on a regular basis and most will find them a good way of alleviating everyday stresses and strains and helping them to relax. Even if your idea of activity is to lie back on the sofa and watch TV with a few snacks, it’s still your activity!
